Doctrine and Covenants 101

Second Coming

Verily I say unto you, concerning your brethren who have been afflicted, and persecuted, and cast out from the land of their inheritance— Doctrine and Covenants 101:1–3

The Lord Jesus Christ speaks and promises to claim His suffering Saints as His own treasure when He comes again. Even chastened disciples are still His if they do not deny Him.

Abraham and Isaac

Therefore, they must needs be chastened and tried, even as Abraham, who was commanded to offer up his only son. Doctrine and Covenants 101:4–5

The Lord points to Abraham offering his only son, which scripture calls a similitude of God offering His Only Begotten Son. Here it is used as the pattern of trial, and sanctification comes only to those who do not deny Christ.

Jesus Christ

Verily I say unto you, notwithstanding their sins, my bowels are filled with compassion towards them. I will not utterly cast them off; and in the day of wrath I will remember mercy. Doctrine and Covenants 101:9

Christ describes His own deep compassion for Saints who sinned. The same merciful Lord who was "moved with compassion" in His mortal ministry refuses to cast off His people.

Take His Name

And all they who have given their lives for my name shall be crowned. Doctrine and Covenants 101:15

Christ promises a crown to those who died bearing His name, such as martyrs for His gospel.

Jehovah

Jehovah — the self-existent, eternal I AM

Therefore, let your hearts be comforted concerning Zion; for all flesh is in mine hands; be still and know that I am God. Doctrine and Covenants 101:16

The Lord speaking in the D&C quotes the words Jehovah spoke in Psalm 46, showing He is the same God of Israel, Jesus Christ. He tells the Saints to be calm because every person is in His hands.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

Second Coming

Behold, it is my will, that all they who call on my name, and worship me according to mine everlasting gospel, should gather together, and stand in holy places; Doctrine and Covenants 101:22–23

Christ tells those who call on His name to gather and prepare, because one day the veil will be taken away and every person on earth will see Him at once. This is His glorious Second Coming.

Millennial Reign

And every corruptible thing, both of man, or of the beasts of the field, or of the fowls of the heavens, or of the fish of the sea, that dwells upon all the face of the earth, shall be consumed; Doctrine and Covenants 101:24–31

Christ describes the world after His coming: the earth made new, His glory everywhere, enmity ended before His face, Satan bound, and death changed into an instant transformation. This is His thousand-year reign.

Second Coming

Yea, verily I say unto you, in that day when the Lord shall come, he shall reveal all things— Doctrine and Covenants 101:32–34

When the Lord Jesus Christ comes again He will reveal everything, including how the earth was made and its purpose. The questions of science and history will be answered by Him.

Jesus Christ

And all they who suffer persecution for my name, and endure in faith, though they are called to lay down their lives for my sake yet shall they partake of all this glory. Doctrine and Covenants 101:35–38

Christ promises that those persecuted for His name will share His glory, and that full joy is found only in Him. He invites the Saints to seek His face always.

Christ's Mortal Teaching

When men are called unto mine everlasting gospel, and covenant with an everlasting covenant, they are accounted as the salt of the earth and the savor of men; Doctrine and Covenants 101:39–40

The Lord repeats His own Sermon on the Mount image of salt, applying it to those who make covenants with Him in His everlasting gospel.

Christ's Mortal Teaching

He that exalteth himself shall be abased, and he that abaseth himself shall be exalted. Doctrine and Covenants 101:42

Christ restates a principle He taught in mortality, the pattern He Himself lived when He humbled Himself and was exalted.

Lord of the Vineyard

And now, I will show unto you a parable, that you may know my will concerning the redemption of Zion. Doctrine and Covenants 101:43–62

In this parable the nobleman, the lord of the vineyard, is the Lord Himself; D&C 103:21 names Joseph Smith as the servant he sends. The Lord owns the vineyard of Zion, sends His servants to redeem it, and promises to come with the rest of His house to possess it.

Second Coming

That the work of the gathering together of my saints may continue, that I may build them up unto my name upon holy places; for the time of harvest is come, and my word must needs be fulfilled. Doctrine and Covenants 101:64–66

Christ explains that the gathering is the harvest of His parable of the wheat and tares, and that He will come in His Father's kingdom to reward and judge everyone by their works. He speaks as the Son of His Father.

Take His Name

There is even now already in store sufficient, yea, even an abundance, to redeem Zion, and establish her waste places, no more to be thrown down, were the churches, who call themselves after my name, willing to hearken to my voice. Doctrine and Covenants 101:75

The Saints call themselves by Christ's name. He says that bearing His name means hearkening to His voice (compare verse 97, those "who call themselves after my name").

Christ's Mortal Teaching

Now, unto what shall I liken the children of Zion? I will liken them unto the parable of the woman and the unjust judge, for men ought always to pray and not to faint, which saith— Doctrine and Covenants 101:81–85

The Lord retells His own parable from His mortal ministry to teach the Saints to keep asking for help, just as He taught His disciples to pray always.

Judgment

And if the president heed them not, then will the Lord arise and come forth out of his hiding place, and in his fury vex the nation; Doctrine and Covenants 101:89–91

The Lord foretells that He will come out of hiding in judgment on unjust rulers, using the very words Jesus used for the fate of the wicked.

Jehovah

Jehovah — the self-existent, eternal I AM

That I may proceed to bring to pass my act, my strange act, and perform my work, my strange work, that men may discern between the righteous and the wicked, saith your God. Doctrine and Covenants 101:95

The speaker claims as His own the "strange work" that Jehovah announced through Isaiah, identifying the Lord of the Restoration with the God of the Old Testament.
