Psalms 91

Jehovah

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. Psalms 91:1–2

The LORD, Jehovah, is the refuge and fortress of those who trust Him. Latter-day Saints know Him as the premortal Christ, the safe place for His people.

How we know: the chapter heading names Him

Jehovah

He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Psalms 91:4

The LORD shelters His people under His wings like a bird. Jesus used the same image of Himself, a hen gathering her chicks, both in Jerusalem and to the Nephites after His Resurrection.

How we know: the chapter heading names Him

Messiah

For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. Psalms 91:11–12

Satan quoted these verses to Jesus on the pinnacle of the temple, daring Him to test God's promise. Jesus refused to tempt God. The quotation shows the verses were understood to apply to the Son of God, and angels did minister to Him after the temptation.

Seed of the Woman

Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. Psalms 91:13

Trampling the serpent and dragon echoes the first promise that the woman's Seed would bruise the serpent's head. Christ gave His disciples power to tread on serpents, and He conquers the dragon, Satan.

• alludes to Genesis 3:15 — The Seed of the woman bruises the serpent's head.
• alluded to by Luke 10:19 — Jesus gives power to tread on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy.

Jehovah

Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. Psalms 91:14–16

The LORD speaks directly, promising to deliver, answer, and honor the one who loves Him and knows His name. Latter-day Saints hear the voice of Jehovah, the premortal Christ. Because verses 11-12 were applied to the Messiah, some also hear the Father's promise to exalt His Son.
