Psalms 97

Second Coming

The LORD reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad thereof. Psalms 97:1–6

The LORD comes in clouds, fire, and lightning, and the mountains melt before Him while all people see His glory. Latter-day revelation uses the same imagery for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, when the mountains flow down at His presence.

Firstborn

Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods. Psalms 97:7

All the 'gods' (the Greek Old Testament reads 'angels') are commanded to worship Him. Hebrews teaches that when the Father brings His Firstborn into the world, He says, 'let all the angels of God worship him.'

Jehovah

For thou, LORD, art high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods. Psalms 97:9–10

Jehovah is exalted above everything and preserves the souls of His saints. Latter-day Saints know Him as the premortal Christ, who keeps and delivers those who love Him.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)

Light of the World

Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart. Psalms 97:11

Light is planted like seed for the righteous and grows into gladness. Christ is the Light of the World, and His light grows brighter in those who follow Him.
