The Lyrics
The Story Behind It
When I wrote “His Light,” I wasn’t thinking about writing a Christian song. Honestly, I was just thinking about myself.
I’ve noticed something over the years. It isn’t usually the big decisions that get me. It’s the thousand little ones. The ones where I already know what’s right, but I talk myself into something else anyway.
Then a little while later I end up asking the same question...
“How did I get back here again?”
I don’t think I’m the only one.
For me, it isn’t always some huge sin. Sometimes it’s pride. Sometimes it’s fear. Sometimes it’s getting so wrapped up in my own thoughts that I convince myself they’re reality. I replay conversations, second-guess decisions, carry things I should’ve let go of a long time ago, and before I know it I’ve spent more time listening to myself than listening to God.
That’s really where this song came from.
The older I get, the more I realize that following Christ usually isn’t one giant moment where everything changes. It’s a choice I have to make over and over again. Sometimes every hour.
One thing that’s been on my mind lately is how often I try to think my way into becoming a better disciple.
As if I can analyze myself enough to become who God wants me to be.
I don’t think that’s how it works.
I think Christ is constantly inviting us to stop staring at ourselves and start looking at Him.
The title “His Light” isn’t just about light overcoming darkness. It’s about direction. When you’re walking in the dark, you don’t need to see the whole trail. You just need enough light to take the next step.
That’s what I keep learning.
The answer to “Why do I always end up here?” probably isn’t another hour of overthinking.
It’s usually one quiet decision to trust Him instead of myself.
Maybe that’s repentance.
Maybe that’s faith.
Maybe those two things are a lot closer than I’ve always thought.
Anyway... that’s why I wrote this one. If you’ve ever found yourself asking that same question, I hope this song reminds you of the same thing I’m trying to remember myself.
His light is still there.
Sometimes all we have to do is quit staring at the darkness long enough to walk toward it.
