Grace in Christ Jesus

Jesus — Jehovah saves; Christ — the Anointed One

Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 Timothy 2:1

Timothy's strength comes from the grace found in Christ.

Jesus Christ, Who Chose His Soldier

Jesus — Jehovah saves; Christ — the Anointed One

Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ. 2 Timothy 2:3–4

A disciple is a soldier enlisted by Christ, living to please the One who chose him.

Jesus Christ of the Seed of David, Raised from the Dead

Jesus — Jehovah saves; Christ — the Anointed One

Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel: 2 Timothy 2:8

Jesus is the promised descendant of King David and He truly rose from the dead. These two facts are the core of Paul's gospel.

• fulfils 2 Samuel 7:12-13 — God promises to raise up David's seed and establish his kingdom for ever

Salvation in Christ Jesus

Therefore I endure all things for the elect’s sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 2 Timothy 2:10

Paul endures suffering so others can receive the salvation and glory found only in Christ.

Faithful Saying: Live and Reign with Him

It is a faithful saying: For if we be dead with him, we shall also live with him: 2 Timothy 2:11–13

"Him" is Christ throughout this early hymn. Those who give their lives to Him will live and reign with Him, and He stays faithful to who He is.

Naming the Name of Christ

Christ — the Anointed One

Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. 2 Timothy 2:19

Those who take Christ's name upon them are to leave sin behind.

The Lord Who Knows His Own

Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity. 2 Timothy 2:19

Paul quotes Moses' words about Jehovah knowing who belongs to Him. The Lord who knows His own is Jehovah, the premortal Christ, who later called Himself the Good Shepherd who knows His sheep.

The Master of the House

If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work. 2 Timothy 2:21

In Paul's image of a great house, the master who uses clean vessels is the Lord. A disciple who is made pure becomes useful in Christ's hands.
