Romans 6

Baptism in the likeness of His death and Resurrection

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Romans 6:3–5

Baptism by immersion is a picture of Jesus: going under the water is like His death and burial, and coming up is like His Resurrection. Paul calls it the 'likeness' of His death and Resurrection, so it points straight to Him.

The old man crucified with Him

Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. Romans 6:6

'Him' is Christ. Our old sinful self is nailed to the cross with Jesus so that sin no longer rules us.

Christ raised, dying no more

Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: Romans 6:8–10

Jesus died once for sin and rose never to die again; death has no power over Him anymore. Because He lives, those who die with Him will live with Him.

Paul tells believers to see themselves as dead to sin and truly alive to God, which is possible only through Jesus Christ.

Eternal life, the gift of God through Jesus Christ

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23

Sin pays out death, but eternal life is a gift from God that comes only through Jesus Christ our Lord.
