The Stone

Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. Daniel 2:34–35

The stone cut out 'without hands' is made by God, not man, and it overcomes every worldly kingdom. The Lord in D&C 65 identifies it with His latter-day kingdom rolling forth to fill the earth, and Jesus spoke of Himself as the stone that grinds to powder those it falls on, so the stone points to Christ and His kingdom.

  • interpreted by D&C 65:2 — The keys of the kingdom are committed to man, and the gospel rolls forth like the stone cut out of the mountain without hands until it fills the whole earth.
  • alluded to by Matthew 21:44 — Jesus, the rejected stone, says whoever it falls on will be ground to powder, echoing the stone that breaks the image to pieces.
  • alluded to by Luke 20:17-18 — Luke's account of the same saying about the stone the builders rejected.

The Kingdom that Shall Never Be Destroyed

And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. Daniel 2:44–45

Daniel prophesies that in the last days God will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed and will outlast every earthly power. Latter-day Saints understand this as the restored Church, the kingdom of God on earth, preparing for Christ to come and reign for ever as King.

God of gods, Lord of kings

The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret. Daniel 2:47

A pagan king confesses that Daniel's God, the God of Israel, rules over all gods and kings. The same kind of title is given to Jehovah in the law of Moses and to the Lamb in Revelation.
