Doctrine and Covenants 43

Abide in me

And this ye shall know assuredly—that there is none other appointed unto you to receive commandments and revelations until he be taken, if he abide in me. Doctrine and Covenants 43:3

The prophet keeps his gift only if he 'abides in' Christ. This echoes Jesus's teaching that the branches live only by staying in the Vine.

Entering by the gate

For verily I say unto you, that he that is ordained of me shall come in at the gate and be ordained as I have told you before, to teach those revelations which you have received and shall receive through him whom I have appointed. Doctrine and Covenants 43:7

A true servant enters 'at the gate,' ordained by Christ, not by climbing in another way. It echoes Jesus's teaching about the true Shepherd who enters the sheepfold by the door.

The great day of the Lord

Hearken ye, for, behold, the great day of the Lord is nigh at hand. Doctrine and Covenants 43:17–18

At His coming, Christ's voice and the trump of God will call the righteous dead to rise first. The wicked stay in the grave until a later resurrection.

Lightning from east to west

Lift up your voices and spare not. Call upon the nations to repent, both old and young, both bond and free, saying: Prepare yourselves for the great day of the Lord; Doctrine and Covenants 43:20–22

The elders' warning will be followed by nature's own warning: thunder and lightning announcing the great day of the Lord. That fits Jesus's words that His coming will be like lightning from east to west.

The God who made you

And again, the Lord shall utter his voice out of heaven, saying: Hearken, O ye nations of the earth, and hear the words of that God who made you. Doctrine and Covenants 43:23

The Lord who calls to the nations from heaven is their Creator. The next verses show He is Christ, the one who wept over Jerusalem.

As a hen gathers her chickens

O, ye nations of the earth, how often would I have gathered you together as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, but ye would not! Doctrine and Covenants 43:24

Christ uses the same heartbroken image He used over Jerusalem and among the Nephites. Like a mother hen, He longs to gather and protect His people, but many refuse.

He would have saved with an everlasting salvation

How oft have I called upon you by the mouth of my servants, and by the ministering of angels, and by mine own voice, and by the voice of thunderings, and by the voice of lightnings, and by the voice of tempests, and by the voice of earthquakes, and great hailstorms, and by the voice of famines and pestilences of every kind, and by the great sound of a trump, and by the voice of judgment, and by the voice of mercy all the day long, and by the voice of glory and honor and the riches of eternal life, and would have saved you with an everlasting salvation, but ye would not! Doctrine and Covenants 43:25

Christ lists the many ways He has called His children: prophets, angels, His own voice, nature, judgment, and mercy. All along He wanted to give them everlasting salvation.

Lord of the Vineyard

Wherefore, labor ye, labor ye in my vineyard for the last time—for the last time call upon the inhabitants of the earth. Doctrine and Covenants 43:28

Christ, the Lord of the vineyard, sends His servants for the final season of labor before His coming, just as in Zenos's allegory.

He will come in judgment; His people reign with Him

For in mine own due time will I come upon the earth in judgment, and my people shall be redeemed and shall reign with me on earth. Doctrine and Covenants 43:29

Christ will come to the earth in judgment. His redeemed people will then reign with Him on the earth.

The great Millennium

For the great Millennium, of which I have spoken by the mouth of my servants, shall come. Doctrine and Covenants 43:30–31

Christ confirms that the Millennium He foretold through His prophets will come. Satan will be bound during that thousand years of Christ's reign.

Through Christ's power over death, the righteous will be changed to a resurrected state in an instant.

Christ the Judge

Everyone will stand before Jesus Christ to be judged. The fate of the wicked is His to decide.

Jesus Christ

Jesus (Yeshua) — Jehovah saves; Christ — the Anointed One

Hearken ye to these words. Behold, I am Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. Treasure these things up in your hearts, and let the solemnities of eternity rest upon your minds. Doctrine and Covenants 43:34

At the close of the warning, the speaker signs His name: Jesus Christ. Every 'I' in the chapter is His.

Savior of the World

Savior — the one who rescues from sin and death

Hearken ye to these words. Behold, I am Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world. Treasure these things up in your hearts, and let the solemnities of eternity rest upon your minds. Doctrine and Covenants 43:34

The Judge who warns the nations is also their Savior, and He wants to save every one of them.
