Isaiah 34

Heavens rolled together as a scroll

And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree. Isaiah 34:4

The heavens rolling up like a scroll is one of the signs of the Lord's coming. John and the Doctrine and Covenants use the same image for the moment just before Christ's face is revealed.

How we know: the chapter heading names Him

  • alluded to by Revelation 6:13-14 — Stars fall and 'the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together.'
  • alluded to by D&C 88:95 — 'the curtain of heaven be unfolded, as a scroll is unfolded after it is rolled up, and the face of the Lord shall be unveiled.'

The day of the Lord's vengeance on Idumea

For my sword shall be bathed in heaven: behold, it shall come down upon Idumea, and upon the people of my curse, to judgment. Isaiah 34:5–8

Bozrah and Idumea (Edom) stand for the wicked world. Isaiah 63 shows the Lord coming from Edom and Bozrah in red garments at His Second Coming, and the Doctrine and Covenants says the Lord will come down in judgment on 'Idumea, or the world.'
