Isaiah 54

Bridegroom (Husband of Zion)

For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called. Isaiah 54:5

The Creator who made Israel is also her covenant Husband. Christ is both the Creator and the Bridegroom of His covenant people, bound to them by covenant love.

Lord of Hosts

Lord of Hosts — Jehovah Sabaoth, Lord of heaven's armies

Zion's husband is named the LORD of hosts, the commander of all the armies of heaven. This is Jehovah, the premortal Christ.

Redeemer

Redeemer — Hebrew go'el, the kinsman who buys back a family member from bondage

For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called. Isaiah 54:5

Like a close relative who pays to free a family member, Christ buys His people back from sin and death. Coming right after Isaiah 53, the Redeemer here is the one who paid that price.

Holy One of Israel

Holy One of Israel — the perfectly holy God who belongs to His covenant people

Isaiah's favorite title for the Lord. The Book of Mormon uses it for Christ, the Holy One who would come to redeem Israel.

God of the Whole Earth

God of the Whole Earth — not only Israel's God but Lord of all nations

For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called. Isaiah 54:5

Israel's Redeemer will be known as God over every nation. When Jesus appeared to the Nephites He introduced Himself with this very title and showed the wounds in His hands, feet, and side.

Redeemer

For a small moment have I forsaken thee; but with great mercies will I gather thee. Isaiah 54:7–8

The Redeemer speaks: any separation from Him is brief compared to His everlasting kindness and mercy. He gathers those He has redeemed.

Jehovah

For this is as the waters of Noah unto me: for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth; so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with thee, nor rebuke thee. Isaiah 54:9–10

Jehovah, who made the rainbow covenant with Noah, swears an equally sure covenant of peace with His people. Mountains may move, but His kindness will not.

Jehovah

And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children. Isaiah 54:13

Zion's children will be taught by the Lord Himself and have great peace. Jesus quoted this line to explain why those taught of God come to Him.

Grace

No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD. Isaiah 54:17

The Lord's servants are protected, and even their righteousness comes from Him. Their goodness is a gift from the Redeemer, not something they produce alone.
