Jeremiah 33

Jehovah

LORD (Jehovah) — the covenant name

Thus saith the LORD the maker thereof, the LORD that formed it, to establish it; the LORD is his name; Jeremiah 33:2–3

The LORD, the Maker and Former, invites Jeremiah to call on Him for revelation. This is Jehovah, the premortal Christ, who answers those who pray.

How we know: the chapter heading names Him

Cleansing from All Iniquity

Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth. Jeremiah 33:6–8

The Lord promises to heal His people and cleanse them from all their sin. That cleansing is what the Atonement of Jesus Christ accomplishes for all who repent.

The Branch of Righteousness

Branch — the new shoot from David's family tree, the Messiah

In those days, and at that time, will I cause the Branch of righteousness to grow up unto David; and he shall execute judgment and righteousness in the land. Jeremiah 33:15

God promises a righteous Branch growing from David's line who will rule with justice. 'The Branch' is a messianic title for Jesus Christ, the Son of David who reigns in righteousness.

The LORD Our Righteousness

Jehovah-tsidkenu — the LORD our righteousness

In those days shall Judah be saved, and Jerusalem shall dwell safely: and this is the name wherewith she shall be called, The LORD our righteousness. Jeremiah 33:16

In Jeremiah 23:6 this is the name of the Branch Himself; here redeemed Jerusalem is called by it, as a covenant people bear their Lord's name. Our righteousness is not our own but comes from Christ.

Son of David on the Throne

For thus saith the LORD; David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel; Jeremiah 33:17–18

David's kingdom fell to Babylon, yet the Lord says David will never lack a man on the throne. That promise is kept only in Jesus Christ, the eternal King from David's line, who is also the great High Priest whose offering never ends.

• fulfilled by Luke 1:32-33 — The throne of his father David... of his kingdom there shall be no end.

Son to Reign on David's Throne

Thus saith the LORD; If ye can break my covenant of the day, and my covenant of the night, and that there should not be day and night in their season; Jeremiah 33:20–22

The Lord says His promise of a son to reign on David's throne is as unbreakable as day and night. The Son who fulfills it is Jesus Christ.

Seed of David as Ruler

Thus saith the LORD; If my covenant be not with day and night, and if I have not appointed the ordinances of heaven and earth; Jeremiah 33:25–26

Again the Lord ties the promise of a ruler from David's seed to the fixed order of heaven and earth. Christ, the seed of David, is that Ruler over the house of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
