Proverbs 23

Redeemer

Redeemer (Hebrew go'el) — the kinsman who buys back, rescues and defends his family

Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless: Proverbs 23:10–11

The orphan may have no human family to defend him, but he has a mighty Redeemer who will take up his case. That Redeemer is the LORD, Jehovah, who is Jesus Christ, our kinsman who buys us back and pleads for us.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

  • the same title in Jeremiah 50:34 — Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD of hosts is his name: he shall throughly plead their cause.
  • the same title in Job 19:25 — I know that my redeemer liveth.
  • the same title in Proverbs 22:22-23 — The LORD will plead their cause.

Jehovah

Jehovah — the covenant name, rendered LORD

Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long. Proverbs 23:17

Instead of envying sinners, live every day in reverence for the LORD, Jehovah, the premortal Christ; verse 18 promises that such hope will not be cut off.
