Jeremiah 50

Jehovah

In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the children of Israel shall come, they and the children of Judah together, going and weeping: they shall go, and seek the LORD their God. Jeremiah 50:4–5

Gathered Israel and Judah return weeping to seek Jehovah and bind themselves to Him in a covenant that will last forever. Latter-day Saints see the gathering to Christ and His everlasting covenant here.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)

Good Shepherd

My people hath been lost sheep: their shepherds have caused them to go astray, they have turned them away on the mountains: they have gone from mountain to hill, they have forgotten their restingplace. Jeremiah 50:6

Jehovah grieves that false shepherds scattered His sheep. Jesus later described His mission to 'the lost sheep of the house of Israel' and called Himself the Good Shepherd.

Jehovah

Hope of their fathers — the One Israel's ancestors trusted for deliverance

All that found them have devoured them: and their adversaries said, We offend not, because they have sinned against the LORD, the habitation of justice, even the LORD, the hope of their fathers. Jeremiah 50:7

Jehovah is called the dwelling place of justice and the hope of Israel's fathers. The premortal Christ was the hope of every faithful ancestor.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)

Atonement

In those days, and in that time, saith the LORD, the iniquity of Israel shall be sought for, and there shall be none; and the sins of Judah, and they shall not be found: for I will pardon them whom I reserve. Jeremiah 50:20

Jehovah promises that the sins of the gathered remnant will be so fully forgiven they cannot be found. That complete pardon is made possible through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

Holy One of Israel

Holy One of Israel — the sacred God who covenanted with Israel

Call together the archers against Babylon: all ye that bend the bow, camp against it round about; let none thereof escape: recompense her according to her work; according to all that she hath done, do unto her: for she hath been proud against the LORD, against the Holy One of Israel. Jeremiah 50:29

Babylon's pride was rebellion against the Holy One of Israel. The Book of Mormon identifies the Holy One of Israel as Jesus Christ.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

• the same title in 2 Nephi 9:41 — 'The keeper of the gate is the Holy One of Israel.'
• the same title in Jeremiah 51:5 — Same title in the next chapter.

Redeemer

Redeemer — one who buys back or frees a captive kinsman

Thus saith the LORD of hosts; The children of Israel and the children of Judah were oppressed together: and all that took them captives held them fast; they refused to let them go. Jeremiah 50:33–34

Captors will not release Israel, but their Redeemer is stronger and will plead their case. Jesus Christ is the Redeemer who frees us from sin and death and pleads our cause before the Father.

How we know: the verse itself names Him
