Revelation 16

Jehovah

Jehovah — 'He who is,' the Eternal One; rendered here 'which art, and wast, and shalt be'

And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus. Revelation 16:5–7

The angel of the waters praises the eternal Lord for His just judgments. The phrase 'which art, and wast, and shalt be' expresses the divine name, which Revelation 1:8 gives to the Alpha and Omega.

Second Coming

Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. Revelation 16:15

Jesus Christ breaks into the vision to speak directly: He will come unexpectedly, like a thief. The blessed are those who watch and keep their covenant garments clean, ready for Him.

How we know: the chapter heading names Him

  • alludes to Matthew 24:43-44 — The goodman of the house and the thief; the Son of man comes in an hour ye think not.
  • alludes to 1 Thessalonians 5:2 — The day of the Lord comes as a thief in the night.
  • the same event in Revelation 3:3 — Christ: 'I will come on thee as a thief.'
  • the same event in D&C 106:4-5 — The coming of the Lord overtakes the world as a thief in the night.

Atonement

And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done. Revelation 16:17

The voice from the throne declares the judgments finished. The words echo the Savior's cry on the cross, 'It is finished,' and the Alpha and Omega's 'It is done' in Revelation 21:6.
