Romans 5

Our Lord Jesus Christ, our access to grace

Jesus — Jehovah saves; Christ — the Anointed One

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: Romans 5:1–2

Peace with God comes through Jesus Christ, and He is the one who opens the door for us to stand in God's grace. We come to the Father through Him.

Christ died for the ungodly

Christ — the Anointed One

For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. Romans 5:6–8

Christ did not wait for us to become good before He died for us; He died for us while we were still sinners. That is the clearest proof of how much God loves us.

Justified by His blood

Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. Romans 5:9

'His blood' and 'him' are Christ from verse 8. His shed blood makes us right with God and saves us from the consequences of sin.

Reconciled by the death of His Son

For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life. Romans 5:10

Jesus is the Son of God whose death brought enemies back into friendship with the Father. And because He lives again, His living power keeps saving us.

The Atonement received through Jesus Christ

Atonement — at-one-ment, being reconciled and made one with God

And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. Romans 5:11

This is the only place the King James New Testament uses the word 'atonement.' It means being made one with God again, and we receive it through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Adam, the figure of Him that was to come

Adam — man, of the earth; 'figure' (Greek typos) — a type or pattern

Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam’s transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. Romans 5:14

Paul says outright that Adam is a 'figure,' a type, of Christ who was to come. As one man's choice brought death to everyone, one Man's obedience brings life to everyone.

The gift by grace by one man, Jesus Christ

But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many. Romans 5:15–17

The gift Jesus Christ gives is far bigger than the damage Adam's fall caused. Through Him grace overflows to many, and those who receive it will reign in life.

The obedience of One

Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. Romans 5:18–19

'The one' is Jesus Christ, set against Adam. His perfect obedience, even to death, is what makes many people righteous.

Eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord

That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 5:21

Sin led to death, but grace now rules and leads to eternal life, and it all comes by Jesus Christ our Lord.
