Isaiah 22

Creator

Ye made also a ditch between the two walls for the water of the old pool: but ye have not looked unto the maker thereof, neither had respect unto him that fashioned it long ago. Isaiah 22:11

The people fortified the city but did not look to the One who made and fashioned it. Jehovah, the premortal Christ, is the Creator they ignored.

Lord of Hosts

Lord of Hosts — Jehovah, commander of the armies of heaven

And in that day did the Lord GOD of hosts call to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth: Isaiah 22:12–15

The Lord GOD of hosts called Jerusalem to repentance, but they chose feasting. Isaiah speaks in His name.

Eliakim, Type of Christ

Eliakim — God will raise up

And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah: Isaiah 22:20–22

Faithful Eliakim replaces proud Shebna and receives the government, the robe, and the key of David's house. The risen Jesus applies this very language to Himself as the one who holds the key of David, who opens and no man shuts.

Eliakim, Type of Christ

And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a glorious throne to his father’s house. Isaiah 22:23–24

Eliakim is a peg driven firmly into a sure place on which the whole household hangs its glory. Christians see the Savior as that sure nail on whom everything depends, bringing glory to His Father's house.

Crucifixion (echo)

In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, shall the nail that is fastened in the sure place be removed, and be cut down, and fall; and the burden that was upon it shall be cut off: for the LORD hath spoken it. Isaiah 22:25

In context the peg gives way under the weight hung on it, a warning about trusting any mortal steward. Some Christians hear an echo of the Savior being cut down while bearing the burden laid upon Him; the reading is uncertain.
