Yet ye have not hearkened unto me, saith the LORD; that ye might provoke me to anger with the works of your hands to your own hurt. Jeremiah 25:7–9
The LORD of hosts, the premortal Christ, speaks through Jeremiah after twenty-three years of ignored warnings and announces the Babylonian captivity.
How we know: the verse itself names Him
For thus saith the LORD God of Israel unto me; Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it. Jeremiah 25:15–17
The cup of God's fury is what the wicked must drink as the consequence of sin. Jesus in Gethsemane drank that bitter cup for all who repent, so they need not drink it themselves.
For, lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished: for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the LORD of hosts. Jeremiah 25:29
Jerusalem is called by Jehovah's name, yet judgment begins there first. Latter-day revelation likewise says the Lord's judgment will begin at His own house.
Therefore prophesy thou against them all these words, and say unto them, The LORD shall roar from on high, and utter his voice from his holy habitation; he shall mightily roar upon his habitation; he shall give a shout, as they that tread the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth. Jeremiah 25:30–33
Beyond Babylon, Jeremiah sees a worldwide day when the LORD roars from heaven and treads the winepress against the wicked of all the earth. Latter-day scripture shows this is Jesus Christ at His Second Coming, coming in red apparel having trodden the winepress alone.
