Psalms 8

Jehovah (the LORD), whose name is excellent

Jehovah — the covenant name, 'I AM,' the eternal One

O LORD, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens. Psalms 8:1

The psalm opens and closes praising the excellent name of the LORD. Latter-day Saints know this name belongs to Jehovah, Jesus Christ, the Creator of the heavens.

How we know: Jehovah is the premortal Christ (Abraham 1:16; D&C 110:3–4)

  • the same title in Psalms 8:9 — The psalm closes with the same praise of His excellent name.
  • alluded to by Philippians 2:9-10 — God gave Jesus a name which is above every name.

Praise from children at the temple

Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger. Psalms 8:2

When children in the temple shouted 'Hosanna to the Son of David' and the chief priests objected, Jesus quoted this verse. It was fulfilled as little ones praised Him while His enemies were silenced.

Son of Man

Son of Man — in Restoration scripture, Son of Man of Holiness, the Son of the exalted Father (Moses 6:57)

What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? Psalms 8:4–6

David marvels at God's care for mankind. The apostles read the 'son of man' here as Jesus, who came down a little lower than the angels in mortality, suffered death, and was crowned with glory with all things put under His feet.

How we know: the verse itself names Him

  • quoted by Hebrews 2:6-9 — We see Jesus, made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour.
  • quoted by 1 Corinthians 15:27 — He hath put all things under his feet, said of the risen Christ.
  • quoted by Ephesians 1:22 — God hath put all things under Christ's feet and gave Him to be head over all things.
  • the same title in Moses 6:57 — Man of Holiness is His name, and the name of His Only Begotten is the Son of Man.
